WSUS Data folder empty on tape

I have recently installed Backup Exec 11d on my WSUS server.  When i attempt to backup the MSSQL$WSUS\Data folder I don't get any errors...but on the tape when I look at it for a potential restore it shows the folder as empty?

How can I backup my Data folder for WSUS?

Would it not be best to create a maintenance schedule within MSSQL and back up either the complete database or the database & transaction logs?
