What do I need to back up Remote Servers

Henry_Arnold

We are currently running Backup Exec V9.1 on a single server. We are running a Windows 2000 domain. I want to be able to back up some remote servers. I've tried going through the product information, but I get confused as to what exactly I need. I want to be able to backup:

1) Windows 2000 Server (w/TS)
2) Exchange 5.5 server (possibly migrating to Exchange 2003)
3) SQL 2000 server

Whether or not I get agents for the Exchange and SQL servers will depend on cost and whether I have to get a new agent for Exchange 2003....

Could someone post the part numbers I need to do this? Thanks in advance...

NOTE:Exchange agent\SQL agent is not tagged to any server, it works per server basis, the only component that gets pushed to remote Exchange server is RAWS (remote agent for windows server or simply remote agent).

To install the exchange you need to :

1) Install\Register the license of "Agent for exchange server" on the MEDIA\Backup Exec server.

2) Install the "Remote agent" on the exchange server.(You need not register the license for remote agent as 1 remote agent is FREE with exchange agent).

Therefore all you have to do is to make sure you have registered the license for EXCHANGE on media server, Incase you have not then go to Tools---serial numbers and installation---select LOCAL INSTALL and also check the remote option so that we can push the remote agent. Incase the remote agent is already installed then dont select remote just enter the serial number and run through the wizard.

Note:Please dont get confused about installing the exchange agent on the remote exchange server, it always goes on the MEDIA server,it only ENABLES the exchange option active, The real work of exporting the exchange data is done by "Remote agent" which needs to be on the remote server. Therefore once you installed the remote agent you can see this service running in the services applet of the remote server.

If you have a remote server which houses SQL and/or Exchange, you may perform backup of the same from your Media server( Local Server ), by referring to technote mentioned below The Technote number 253168 would help you key in Agent for SQL /Exchange license in media server and in the same technote please select "Remote Install" checkbox in Figure 2 so as to perform push installation of remote agent on the target machine on which you have SQL and/or Exchange installation.

You can even perform a silent installation of remote agent BUILD 9.1:(Incase push install does not work).

Make sure you have given following rights to the backup exec service account.

Most of the time account does not have "DOmain admin" and "Exchange FUll admin" rights.

Apart from remote agent installation as stated in previous email, some more for Media Server.

Remote backup of SQL2000,
If media server has no SQL2000 installed, you need to install SQL2000 connectivity components on media server (select custom install of SQL2000)

Remote backup of Exchange,
If media server has no Exchange installed, you need to install Exchange Enterprise manager on media server.

Otherwise, you will only see the file level selection but no selection for Exchange or SQL specific features.

Guys, please correct me if it is wrong as I read the technote long time ago.

I'm confused... Are you telling me that the server that has the tape drive and Backup Exec has to have Exchange and/or SQL services installed befoe it can back up an exchange database on a different server? Note that all servers are physically located in teh same room, connected to the same GB switch and are all in the same domaiin/subnet....

Not really!

But if the server with tape drive and BackupExec installed (we call it the media server), but it has no SQL or Exchange on it. It needs some components of SQL and Exchange in order to browse SQL database or Exchange mailboxes/Information Store on the remote server. You don't need to install the full version of them but just the connectivity components.

http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/235680.htm read section after point 19. (SQL)

http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/240201.htm read the very last portion of the doc (Exchange)

Hope this help

Oops! The doc for Exchange mentioned that BackupExec 9.x doesn't require to install additional Microsoft components on the Media Server. Sorry for confuring you again.

Hi,

You mentioned earlier ,

I want to be able to backup:

1) Windows 2000 Server (w/TS)
2) Exchange 5.5 server (possibly migrating to Exchange 2003)
3) SQL 2000 server

We assume from above, that these servers are unique (independent) and all are remote to the backup exec server.

Hence in such a scenario you would require following agents to be able to back them,

-One Exchange agent license:

This would include by default, a remote agent license with it.So this will be sufficient to backup the remote Exchange server.

-One remote agent license:
To backup the windows 2000 server.

-One SQL agent license:
This would include by default, a remote agent license with it.So this will be sufficient to backup the remote SQL server.

Hope this clarifies your doubt regarding the licensing required.
==============================
FYI:

-To backup SQL server(Local or remote),you need to purchase SQL agent license and install it on the Backup exec server only.

-To backup Exchange server(Local or remote),you need to purchase Exchange agent license and install it on the Backup exec server only.

For this you may refer the following technote,
http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/253168.htm

-To backup any remote server, you need to purchase remote agent license. This should be registerd on the backup exec server and installed on the remote server.

For this you may refer the following technote,
http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/253058.htm

-With every SQL and Exchange agent license you will get a remote agent free which can be used anywhere.

-So if the Exchange/SQL server is remote to backup exec server, you are not required to purchase an extra remote agent as it comes free with the Exchange/SQL agents.

Hope this resolves your query.
