Why require exchange management tool on the backup exec server?

hello all,

as reuqired by BE Admin manual, we should intall Exchange Managment Tools on the Backup Exec server if you want to backup exchange 2007/2010

but, in my enviroment, I have not install EMS on the Backup exec server, and I can backup my exchange 2010 and restore mails for the users. why?

Symantec recommends to have Exchange Managment tools installed on the Backup Server even though backups and restores are working.

The user's question is: Why?

I beleive you need to have the management tools installed when you want to have GRT backup . I guess backup exec needs it when wrting catalog information to tape where in it needs to expand to individaul mailboxes and may for generating the restore selection list for GRT backup set which is stored on disk.

The user said that he can restore mail without the tools installed, so why are the tools needed?
