Will a desaster recovery work?

Hello,

I am using Veritas Backup Exec 8.6 without the open file option (no
more available, I was told).

I have a full backup to a network share, the logfile shows some files.
I would like to know if a full restore will work with my backup file.
The server is a Win2000 SP4 Terminal Server plus Domain Controller. I
make the backup (full backup incl. system state) after a fresh reboot,
nobody should be working on the system.

The message of the files is in english something like "Element xyz is
currently in use - skipped". I numbered the files:

1) Element \Dokumente und Einstellungen\backupuser\Lokale
Einstellungen\Temp\JET47A.tmp wird gerade benutzt - übersprungen.
2) Element \Dokumente und Einstellungen\backupuser\Lokale
Einstellungen\Temp\JET5140.tmp wird gerade benutzt - übersprungen.
3) Element \Dokumente und Einstellungen\backupuser\Lokale
Einstellungen\Temp\JETC.tmp wird gerade benutzt - übersprungen.
4) Element \WINNT\security\edb.log wird gerade benutzt - übersprungen.
5) Element \WINNT\security\tmp.edb wird gerade benutzt - übersprungen.
6) Element \WINNT\System32\CPL.CFG wird gerade benutzt - übersprungen.
7) Element \WINNT\System32\dhcp\dhcp.mdb wird gerade benutzt -
übersprungen.
8) Element \WINNT\System32\dhcp\j50.log wird gerade benutzt -
übersprungen.
9) Element \WINNT\System32\dhcp\tmp.edb wird gerade benutzt -
übersprungen.
10) Element \WINNT\System32\wins\j50.log wird gerade benutzt -
übersprungen.
11) Element \WINNT\System32\wins\wins.mdb wird gerade benutzt -
übersprungen.
12) Element \WINNT\System32\wins\winstmp.mdb wird gerade benutzt -
übersprungen.
13) Element
\WINNT\sysvol\sysvol\MYDOMAIN.local\DO_NOT_REMOVE_NtFrs_PreInstall_Dire
ctory wird gerade benutzt - übersprungen.
14) Element \WINNT\Temp\VxsvcError.log.tmp wird gerade benutzt -
übersprungen.

I am not worried about 1, 2, 3 and 14 as they are temp-files.

I am not worried about 10, 11, 12 as I had to delete them last week
because of a WINS error in the database, everything is working fine
without them (autom. rebuild).

I am not sure about 7, 8, 9 - however, I am NOT using DHCP.

I am absolutely concerned about 4, 5, 6.

And finally 13 is an empty directory but part of active directory.

Will a restore without these files create a working system or not?

Best regards

I am fairly sure it will, but being one that likes to see it to believe it, I would shut the system down, swap the system drive with an empty drive and do a test disaster recovery.

Hi ramblreb,

thank you for your answer.

What do you mean by desaster recovery?

I am not sure which method I should prefer, Intelligent Desaster Recovery (BootCD-Rom, floppy) or the "normal" way (install minimum Win2k Server, boot in save mode, run Backup exec from there - i guess).

I do not exactly recall, however, I think I saw what was written in the myserver.dr file - and there the small and hidden partition of my DELL-Utilities was missing. So, IDR would not exactly recreate my drive.

What would you suggest?

Best regards
