Wrong block size

Stefan_Bredl

Hello,

i've a problem after installing the 11d version (exactly: upgrading from version 9) and also all available updates (via Liveupdate):
When i start a backup job, i get a failure message: "wrong block size"

My tape drive is a Tandberg SLR7.
I use the Symantec drivers.

The block size in BE is 1KB (standard).

Can anyone help me? Have i to change the block size? If yes: which block size and which buffer size is the right one.

Thank you all for a fast answer.

best regards
Stefan

Generally you want to make the block size the largest your device will support. At NO time would I recommend 1K

Try either 64KB or 32KB, buffer size of 128KB and number of buffers 10

Also, be sure that neither "Single Bock" option is selected

Hi Ken,

thank you for your answer.

I tried block size 32KB and 64KB with buffer size 128KB and buffers 10
Single block mode is off...

always get the failure:
"Used block size is not correct"

Does anyone have an idea? Do i need another driver?

best regards... and many thanks for your answers

Stefan

Stefan,

I would recommend contacting your hardware manufacturer for the best settings for your tape drive. Backup Exec uses the most common settings for the tape drive.

Were these tapes previously used with another baskup program?

if so, try a quick erase/label to see if BackupExec will now accept them

hello,

no success after erasing or labeling the tapes. I also deleted the drive from the drive pool and added it again... no success...

The drive manufacturer said, the parameter for the block size given by standard configuration of BE are correct.

any other ideas?

best regards
Stefan

Have you clicked on the "Use defaults" option within the properties of your tape drive?

If you have, have you tried brand new media? Maybe there is a problem reading your older media.

Hello,

yes, i clicked "use defaults"; did not use brand new medias. I used the ones I used before with BE 9.
Is it necessary to buy brand new medias for backup with BE 11d?

Stefan,

No, you should not have to buy new media to use the product. I only wanted to test that, to see if the tape drive had a problem reading you older tapes. If you have new media, can you try that step?

Have you also installed the latest Device Drivers for Backup Exec? You can find them here:

32bit Device Drivers:

x64bit Device Drivers:

Bradley,

i installed the drivers you told me. No success...
Perhaps i can order a new tape to test whether it runs with a brand new tape...

Any other suggestions are welcome!

best regards
Stefan

Stefan,

Let me do some research on this, and I'll post a reply later on.

Stefan,

We just tested this drive, and it works in our environment. What firmware is your drive at? You can get the firmware version by right clicking on the device in the Device tab, and selecting properties. We were running version 0447.

What kind of SCSI controller do you have this attached to? Have you updated the drivers for that?
