a000fe30 - A communications failure has occurred

My media server is Win2k with BE 9.1. I receive this error when running a differential backup of a remote Netware 6.5 server. This issue just started recently. Only happens on 1 Netware server on 1 specific volume. Full backups of the same volume work fine, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello David!

This usually happens when the service of remote agent is terminated on the Backup Exec media server or beremote.nlm gets unloaded on the Netware server during the backup process. This is because Backup Exec uses remote agent to communicate with the remote server. After getting the communication failure error, observe the status of the remote agent on Windows server and on the Netware. If it is stopped, try restarting it.

Ashutosh

The remote agent on the Netware server is still running. This particular volume is the 2nd set in this server's backup job, 2 volumes backup after the communication failure with no issues.

Hello,

Do the differential backups of the other volumes work fine? Run a backup of the volume in question separately and test the results. Also refer to the following technote which might help resolve the problem:

Revert with details if the issue persists.

All other volumes back up fine. Full backups of the volume also back up fine. Just differentials fail.

Hello David,
Please check if there are any alerts and ensure that there is sufficient media to complete the job. Check the event log for the errors occurring during the time of failure.

I have discovered that this volume displays "unable to initialize remote agent" when being backed up. All other volumes on this server are using the remote agent. Only happens when doing a differential backup???????

Hello,

The proper method of selecting a NetWare server for backup is to select from underneath of the Novell Storage Management Services (SMS) branch of the Backup Selections interface. If NetWare systems are properly selected in the Backup Exec interface in this manner, this issue will not occur.
If a NetWare server is selected via "NetWare or Compatible Network" the Remote Agent error will be generated. The job log will also report: "Unable to initialize Remote Agent for Windows Servers - performing standard backup." The alert and verbiage of the message received is inaccurate, and can be ignored. The error occurs even when Backup Exec Remote Agent for NetWare is installed. This is not the agent being referenced in the text, for it is not used for NON-SMS backups.

The selections are made under "Novell Storage Management Services" for all volumes, there are no selections under "Netware Services".

The only thing in the event log is the Backupexec message stating the job failed with the "A communications failure has occurred" message.
