I want to back up my active directory. But when I created my backup job, I couldnt solely select active directory. A message saying the item can't be individually selected. So basically I have to all my system states. Is that a good practice?

If you want to back up Active Directory itself, you need to license that option.

Yes. Otherwise you won't see it. You will have a 60-day trial in backup Exec 2010. Run through the licensing wizard and then see if your evaluation warrants it.
