append to media, terminate job if no appendable media is available

i have sep 12. version 14 rev 1798.  I have been told that there is a bug in the above option and that the previous option listed(append to media, overwrite if no appenable media)should be chosen.  Has this been resolved yet.  I don't like the idea of having the whole tape overwritten if there is an issue with a late order job in the list of jobs.  Was this really considered a bug?

I am assuming that you are asking about Backup Exec 2012, rather than SEP.

I recall that BE 2012 when first released had some sort of issue with appending and the workaround was to change the option.  I believe that was fixed a long time ago, but I don't see it in a quick glance of the service pack 2 release notes.

"append to media, overwrite if no appenable media" is the default option and it should never overwrite a protected tape.  I consider the "terminate job" option to be fairly harsh, but it may make sense with a stand-alone drive more than a robotic library.

It is reccomended to set your method to append to media, overwrite if no appendable media is available. Backup Exec won't overwrite your tapes if they aren't appendable. Make sure your settings are correct to prevent media from being overwritten OPP and Append period settings are set to your desired data retention times. review http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH5459

I think this may be the issue you were referring to, but it only affects upgrades.  yes, it is fixed, in service pack 2.
