I have Backup Exec 11d (base install, no updates) running on windows server 2003 and backing up other 2003 servers. I just added a 2008 server and the agent will not push to it. My question is: if I update to the latest service pack (SP3?) will that allow me to push a valid agent to the 2008 server or will I have to upgrade to Backup Exec 12.0 or later? thanks in advance for your comments :)

BE12.0 and above supports Win 2008 server.
BE12.5 SP3 and above supports Win 2008 R2 server
BE11d SCL http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH50180
BE12.0 SCL http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH56442
Its recommended to upgrade to BE2010 R3.

Just to clarify 12.5 SP3 only provides basic support for 2008 R2 against capabilities that were in the operating system before the R2 release. Also in 12.5, 2008 R2 is only supported by remote agents, to run a media server on that operating system you must use 2010 or later

thank you for your response....I see from what you said that it looks like I need to upgrade to 12.5 SP3 if I want just the agent to work, which is all I need at this point, but I may as well go to 2010 at that rate :)

You can directly upgrade from 11d to Be2010 R3.
Before upgrading make a copy of DATA and CATALOGS folder which are located at
X:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec
