hello dears

i have installed symantec backup.exec 2010 r3. Now im ready to schedule a backup strategy for my virtual infrastucture.

but im a little bit confuse how to organize tape in to tape library and then how to configure tape library with append and overwrite.

Actually i have ten tapes and i want to use both for full and differinicial backup.

could you please suggest anything what to do in that case ?

thanks

Start with a pen and piece of paper.

A) Decide upon retention requirements for both Full and Differential backups.

B) Check the data size that has to be backedup.

C) See how much of storage space you have to retain backups? (Tapes and incase if you have any disk)

D) Depending on A and B, you might need to buy tapes or extra disk space. If you can't you would need to recalculate retentions.

E) Once done configure media sets, backup jobs and link them both.

Some Advices:

A) Go through the Admin guide and Articles/Tech Notes pointed here before starting designing/ configuration. Understand what OPP and AP actually mean and how it works. It makes the life really easy.

B) Do not try to micro-manage media usage, let backup software do that job for you.

C) Do not assign medias to media sets manually, let them be in Scratch Pool.

Some discussions i thought would help you in understanding media rotation:
