backup to dvd

is it possible to backup straight to dvd or must you backup to disk and then to disc?  im wondering because i get this "incorrect function" error when i try to set up a dvd backup device.  what does this mean?

oh wow fast response.  what kind of 3rd party software is necessary?  ive seen that before...is that just to format the dvd's or is it something else?

It just means that the nedia must be formatted and ready to receive data, usually by using a utility that the drive manufacture provides
