best practice for BE upgrade to a new server

hello guys,

 

please advise me the best practice for upgrading BE 2010 to BE 2012 in a new server.

 

how can i do it without loosing my DB?

 

should i upgrade first to 2012 at the old server and then install it at the new server?

 

how do i handle the DB?

If you do not want to loose your old configuration, you need to do an upgrade in-place first and then move BE to the new server using the procedure in this document

if i do a fresh install of version 2012 at the new server can i perform an inventory and see what i got on the tapes?

Inventory is not enough; you would need to catalog every tape.

I agree with PKH . I have done this several times. It will be a lot easier if your new backup server has the same name as the old one. Upgrade the old backup server first, then stop all be services including sql. You can then copy the folder \program files\symantec\backupexec\ data and catalogs . On the new server install be and when the installation is complete stop all services including sql. Copy the directories to the new location . If the server name is the same you should have no problem . If the name has changed you will probably have to use the beutility to change the server name for the qsl instance.
