error with ndmp subsystem and ms networking

is it 100% necessary to have MS networking installed on the servers(agent) I want to backup? I am trying to harden our server and it seems your Backup software is forcing me to leave it wide open for attack . I created this backup job using "user defined selection" in the backup dialouge.

When I open up port 10000 and 445 on the agent server my backup works.

If I close port 445 and/or uninstall "client for microsoft networks" nd/or "file and print sharing for microsoft networks" the backup fails with this error:

An error was encoountered while attempting to browse the contents of \\10.1.2.22. An unknown error occurred within the NDMP subsystem.

thanks

Hi James,

Have a look at the requirements for a secured backup network:

Hope this helps.

I have enabled dynamic ports like the article says and turned off "ms networking" and netbios . I still get the same error. Just to make sure the ports were not being blocked I allowed all tcp ports between the ra and be media server.

What am i doing wrong?
