file is corrupt on media

We are running Netware 6.5 and backing up with BE 9.0 for Netware to a HP 960 tapedrive. Things have been going along swimmingly, but recently the backup job has begun to report the error "file xxx\yyy\zzz.zzz is corrupt on media" for certain files and ending with a final repeat of the first error message and the job log showing Error. The files affected seem mostly to be files originally produced by our Macintosh users, any and all sorts ie indd jpg tif psd pdf and so on. The files don't seem to be damaged in any way and can be opened. Another odd thing is that the number of files affected seems to be dropping in multiples of eight.
All this started the day after we had filled up the volume in question with a runaway copy and a. purged files to create more space b. removed the offending gigabytes c. added a new harddisk to the pool. I find references to the file X is corrupt on media problem here, but none of the problem descriptions match ours, we don't run SAV.

We had this issue on a few of our servers that were installed with NetWare 6.0 and 1 GB of RAM, then upgraded to NetWare 6.5 and 3.0 GB of RAM.  The fix was to go to Server Auto-Protect Options and do the following:

  • Under Network Scanning Options, uncheck Enable Scanning
  • Under Auto-Protect Advanced Options, change Scan Files When from Accessed or Modified (scan on create, open, move, copy or run) to Modified (scan on create).
This from the documentation:

If the media server runs out of short-term memory while backing up an SMS device, the files being processed are backed up as corrupt files.

I had tried to change the applicable settings in NetWare relating to short term memory allocation, but the above solution was the only thing that worked.  A reinstall of Syamantec antivirus did not work.

Hope this helps!
