problem in Media set creation

Dear All,

We have
SUN Sl48tek tape library and Symantec backup exec 12.5 running on windows 2003 standard edition. We are taking NDMP backup, our current backup polices are below

Daily Incremental – 5Weeks Retention
Weekly Full - 5Weeks Retention
Monthly full (Once in a month end) – 1Year Retention
Yearly full (last month backup) - 7Years Retention

Currently the tapes are using commonly to all the job but

We want to categories that daily job should use daily tapes; weekly should use weekly tapes respectively. We are labeling starting D as Daily, W as Weekly vice versa to avid confusion.

Whether we can create 4 media sets like daily, weekly, monthly and yearly, assign the new tapes automatically to new media sets and the job should take tapes from the new media sets.

Is it possible to achieve this in Backup EXEC 12.5, if yes can any one give how to procedure.

Kindly let me know if you need any additional information regarding this.

Your help is most appreciated and thanks in advance.

Thanks
Babu

Yes. You most certainly can create 4 media sets for your purpose.  Go tot the Media tab, right-click on Media Sets and select New Media Set.  Give the media set a name and change the Overwrite Protection Period and Append Protection Period accordingly.

Once the media sets are created, you can the associate each tape with the appropriate media sets.  If you don't associate with the media sets, they would be used in the order your jobs are run, so you may end up with your D tapes in your monthly media set and so on.

In your job properties, under the Device and Media, use the Media Set dropdown box to select the appropriate media set for the job.

Hello,

The BEST option will be partitioning the Library Slots for Daily, weekly, monthly backups.

For Example:
We have 8 slots in the Library and we require 2 Tapes for Daily, Weekly and monthly backups

We can partition the Library: Slot 1-2 : Daily Backups, Slot 3-4 : Weekly Backups and so on...after the Partitioning, open the Job Properties..Example : Daily Backup..Device & Media option and Route the Job on Partition-1...

We need to make sure that RIGHT TAPES are in the RIGHT Slots

How to partition and manage an Autoloader or a Robotic Library using Backup Exec 10.x, 11.x and 12.x

Create 4 Media Sets:
Daily : Append Period : 7 Days and Overwrite Protection Period : 7 days
Weekly : Append Period : 1 Day and Overwrite Protection Period : 5 weeks
Yearly : Append Period : 1 Day and Overwrite Protection Period : 1 year

Associate the TAPES in Slot 1-2 to the Daily Media Set and so on....

Hope this helps...
