I have a Windows 2003 SBS server with all updates applied. I am running Backup Exec 11d 7170 w/SP4 and all latest hotfixes. Lately, when the backup runs, it gets stuck on "updating catalogs" and will not complete. If I try to cancel the job, it will not let me cancel until I restart the services. Most times, when trying to restart services, the "Backup Exec Device and Media Service hangs on "stopping". Sometimes, the server does not reboot and just hangs until I power it down. Once the server is back up, I usually get a message that the service encountered a problem and needed to close, referring to the Backup Services. At this point, I can restart the services (they usually do not start when the server boots up even though they are on automatic startup). After this, the process starts again. Have tested drive and drive passes. Have new tapes. Have uninstalled Backup Exec and reinstalled. nothing in Event logs other than errors with the services not being able to stop or start.
