speed up Linux Agent backup

Hallo,
 
I want to know, if somebody has some ideas to speed up the Backup of some Files with the Linux Agent.
 
I trying to Backup IMAP Messages and get a speed of around 170 MByte/Minute. If I put in the same directory bigger files, I get with the bigger files up to an speed of 1005 MByte/Minute
 
Since the IMAP Backup is over 500 GByte, the Backup Speed is much to slow to run an Fullbackup.
 
Any ideas, how to speed things up.

Markus,
This document is written for NetBackup but many of the the same principles apply for ALL backup software including BackupExec. It is worth thumbing through.
