system state restore failed. disk full. now WinSxS is massive and I can't clean it up

I performed a restore of my system state on a Server 2008 DC using Backup Exec 2010 R3. We have our own reasons for not upgrading. THIS is not the point.

The restore failed because of insufficient disk space. Thankfully, the data i needed restored was restored and I was able to perform the authoritative restore of some objects in my Active Directory. But now my Windows\WinSxS folder is HUGE. It's taking up 45Gig of my 60Gig system partition. Before the restoration, it was only taking up 29Gig. That 16G of extra junk was put there during the restore of the system state on the server. I can't run DISM because that only works on 2008 R2. This is the older 2008 release. I can't use COMPCLN because that was run months ago.

I'm wondering if anyone else has run into this issue or has any suggestions on how to reclaim all of the space that I've lost due to this failed data restore.

What was the OS version at the time of backup. When you perfromed the restore was the OS the same version and patch level as at the time of Backup from which it was restored? You could try performing the steps mentioned in the Microsoft KB below
