why does one ext usb drive work, yet all else fail?

Hello,

I have three backup-to-disk folders on external usb drives. HD1,HD2,HD3

When I try to inventory any of the three one at a time, i get this error. (HD1 Sometimes is successful)

Final error: 0xe0008115 - Physical Volume Library Drive or Robot paused, offline, or disabled.
Final error category: Backup Device Errors

I go back to devices and choose for them to be "online" untill they finally show that they are not "offline"

Start a backup job on HD1 is usually ok.

Starting a backupjob on HD2 or HD3 gives me errors or just sits in "queued" state.
The two errors are:

Final error: 0xe000810c - Physical Volume Library Drive not available.
Final error category: Backup Device Errors

or

Final Error: 0x84d9 - 0x 84d9 (34009)
Final error category: Other Errors

Thanks in advance and let me know if you need any further information.

I think it is a serious design flaw, but the way that Veritas designed External B2D requires that every time a B2D Drive is connected, it must be mounted as the same unique drive letter.

that is Disk1 must always be S: Disk2 - T: and Disk3 - U: for example

Are you trying to mount these drives on the same drive letter?

Ken,

Thanks for your response.

Yes, USB HD 1 for some reason always seems to mount on G:

The other two(USB HD 2 and HD 3) on F: which is the next logical drive.

I remember reading that each usb drive or backup to disk folder must stay the same so i chose F: for HD2 and HD3

Should i choose a different approach to give them unique drive letter designations?

If I choose for them to use different drive letters, my settings seem to be erased the next time i plug in the external HD2 or HD3. Yet HD1 keeps its settings!

Please advise.

ok.. update.

i just got hd3 to retain a drive of Z:

recreated the backup to folder device.. and I get this error when trying to backup to HD3

Final error: 0x84d9 - 0x 84d9 (34009)
Final error category: Other Errors

The error expamds to
Message=There was an error processing the on tape catalogs.

Are you sure that the drive is being moounted at the same drive letter? You haven't deleted any files from explorer have you?

Ken,

This is what I did on HD2 and HD3

Deleted them under devices as backup to disk folders.

assigned them drive letters Y: and Z: (they now mount to those drive letters when I plug them in)

I manually deleted all the BKE files that was in the old backuptodisk folder. So that the only folder is

Y:\databackup2

I added that folder as the backup to disk folder under devices.

I performed a successful inventory and verified that it was online

I attemped a backup to this device and received

Final error: 0x84d9 - 0x 84d9 (34009)
Final error category: Other Errors

please advise..

should i be creating a new backup to disk folder? or do you have any ideas?

Thanks!

yes, from within the GUI, delete whatever you called the original folder, then create a new B2D on removable media folder.

Removable media folder? do you mean backup to disk folder?

I tried both suggestions anyway..

I used the gui in devices to create a new backup to disk folder and used backup exec to create a new folder on the usb HD3

I also created a new removable backup to disk folder on Z: (HD3)

Tested two backup jobs to either storage destination and got the same errors

Final error: 0x84d9 - 0x 84d9 (34009)
Final error category: Other Errors

There are two kinds of B2D folders. Standard and on Removable Media. REV drives, USB and Firewire all count as removable

At this point you may need to open a paid incident with Symantec, unless one of their Techs jumps in - I'm out of suggestions.

Ken,

Thanks for the effort and support..

that is strange that the B2D folders have been working on standard for HD1, but not HD2 or HD3.

Do you think you could escalate and refer Bradley Willadsen to this thread?

I don't work for Veritas/Symantec (see the icon under my name)

You can either wait for one of the Symantec Techs to jump in on this thread,or you can open a new one. Probabaly get faster response if you open a new one.

Is it possible that it is GRT related? Since so many users are complaining about the buggy BE 11d, it might be worth the effort to make a quick test with GRT disabled.

Howard_Chiu

Bin,

do you know how I can disable GRT?

Bugs with BE 11d? Should i Look for a 10d trial instead?

Bin_Fang_2

The GRT functionality is enabled by default when Backup Exec 11d is installed with the Exchange Agent option. GRT functionality is enabled either in the Tools / Options - Set Application Defaults, Backup Job Properties, or Job Defaults windows by checking the Microsoft Exchange option to Enable the restore of individual mail messages and folders from Information Store backups.

The above paragraph is from this link: http://support.veritas.com/docs/287318

Hope this helps.

thanks for the suggestion
I believe i have disabled the "GRT"

i went to

tools > options > microsoft exchange

i UNCHECKED the box

"enable the restore of individual mail messages and folders from Information Store backups"

Still the same errors.
