write not ready failure

We are using an ADIC Scalar 100 tape library with 3 drives, and one of the drives comes up with an error at the end of the FULL weekly backup, "Adamm Mover Error: Write Not Ready Failure, Error_IO_device" Event ID 33152. But, later that evening, the Differential backup runs fine on the same drive! Could this be a timeout issue because the FULL backup takes 21 hours and the DIFF backup takes only 3.5 hours?

Hello,

1. Refer to this technote to troubleshoot the issue:

Title : When performing an Eject job in VERITAS Backup Exec (tm) for Windows Servers 9.x on a Dell PowerVault 110T-LTO2 device, Event ID 33152 is reported in the Microsoft Windows Event Log.
http://support.veritas.com/docs/264273

2. In addition, this error occurs during the ejct operation so check if you have selected the option to eject the tape after job completes in the job properties.

3. It is also possible that it occurs at the point where the tape is full and the backup requires another tape to continue.

We are not trying to eject the tape, so the article does not apply. This only occurs on a FULL backup, the Differential backups work fine to the same tape drive. The error messages are:

Adamm Mover error: Write Failure!
Error = ERROR_IO_DEVICE
Adamm Mover Error: Write Not Ready Failure
Error = DRROR_DEVICE_NOT_CONNECTED
The drive hardware is offline!

But we know it is NOT offline, because the differential backup reads and writes data to the drive just fine, and completes successfully. There are also no errors on the Scalar 100 tape library. It only happens on the FULL weekly backup, and only gives errors in Veritas and the Windows Event Log.

Hello,

Generally speaking, I/O errors are the first indication that a tape, SCSI controller or SCSI cable going bad. It may also be indicative of outdated or incompatible firmware on the device itself. As the Dell technician suggested checking the firmware to the Sony tape drive (AIT 35 GB SCSI LVD SDX-400C) and firmware on SCSI controller can be the cause of the error message.

In addition, refer following steps:

1. Install latest VERITAS drivers:
VERITAS Backup Exec (tm) 9.1 - Device Driver Installer (20050115) - Includes Tape Driver Release (20041231) and Robotic Library Release (45) (Intel Only) http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/273853.htm

2. - Update the device firmware to the latest available
- Update the SCSI BIOS/firmware to the latest available
- Check if all devices are properly terminated
-- Clean tape drive at least 3 to 4 times using cleaning media
- Try with fresh media.

3. Disable RSM service.
Title: How to disable Removable Storage for troubleshooting purposes http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/231679.htm

4. Ensure that you have not connected the tape drive to a RAID controller. Use separate SCSI controller card to use with the tape hardware. Please refer to the following technote:
Title: Why is it not recommended for tape devices to be connected to RAID controllers?
http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/191488.htm

For reference:
--------------------

Title: Device I/O error occurs during the verify portion of a backup operation with VERITAS Backup Exec (tm)
http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/191087.htm

To isolate the issue:
------------------------------
a. Perform backup using Backup to Disk folder. This step is for test purpose only.

b. Perform the backup operation from NTBackup utility. Stop all Backup Exec related services prior to running the NTBackup. This will help us in isolating the issue. If you face the same problem in NT Backup then please contact your hardware vendor and get the device checked.
