Hello,
What is the best method to put custodians on legal hold? Previously, before we purchased DA, we were putting users in a forever retention policy with no ability to delete and archive and then moving them out of that policy. Problem is, during that hold time those messages get a retention of forever and that has become on internal issue. We do have DA now and was wondering if custodian archives could be placed on hold without preforming a search?
-Thanks

Best answer then is to uncheck the "Allow expired items from this archive automatically" in the archive properties.

When you create the case in DA you have a check-block for Legal Hold. This will put the results of the searches on hold, not the entire archive.
Additioanlly, rather than applying a different retention policy you can just disable a single archive from having data deleted, this will prevent any expiration of that data regardless of the retention category.
Cleaning up the remments of the prior policies will be more problematic, but will envolve manipulation of the SQL tables which is not for the faint-hearted and is mostly undocumented and not recommended.

Yes, I know the search results can be. but most of the time we receive a notice to hold without having to perform a search. A search may or may not come before a settlement of somekind.
