Do you really need to backup your Salesforce Data? ☁

Salesforce is one of the largest cloud computing service as a software (SaaS) company that specializes in customer relationship management (CRM). Salesforce is part of the way a lot of businesses operate.

But, there is a false impression that data created and stored in Cloud services like SaaS such as Salesforce doesn’t need to be backed up beyond the native offerings.

So, why you need Salesforce backup?

For all the great features which Salesforce provides – and the amazing way it allows you to personalize interactions in order to grow relationships with your customers – Salesforce is susceptible to data loss which means you need to have a backup.

There are several ways it’s easy to lose data when using Salesforce which includes (and is not limited to):

  • Human error or accidental deletion
  • Internal threats (Malicious insiders/employee tampering)
  • External threats (Malware/Ransomware)
  • Salesforce Data Recovery Service Retirement

Just imagine if you lost access to all the information in your Salesforce environment. With so much data distributed across Salesforce – whether that’s Accounts, Campaigns, Cases, Contacts, Events, Leads, Notes, Opportunities, and even Tasks details – backing everything up is vital.

Goodbye, Salesforce Data Recovery Service (formerly known as Data Restoration Services):

As of July 31, 2020, Salesforce has officially retired its Data Recovery services which essentially means you can lose your Salesforce data to accidental deletion, human error, malicious intent, sync issues or ransomware if you don’t have a backup.Ultimately, now it’s up to you, the user, to safeguard your data. Many companies don’t realise that Salesforce will now no longer be responsible for recovery of user’s data – and this can have serious consequences.

Now, don’t get me wrong but if Salesforce Data Recovery Services was your excuse of not investing in a proper data protection solution for your mission critical Salesforce data, that was a bad excuse and which no longer exists!

Salesforce is a great CRM tool, but their data recovery services was not top notch and didn’t even meet their company high standards for customer experience. Sometimes, it took more than a month to get the data back from Salesforce. That’s right, more than a month! And, then too, recovery wasn’t reliable and guaranteed.

For every recovery support request, you would get several CSVs and it would be your responsibility to upload that data back into Salesforce. This recovery process was not only very manual and tedious, but also very expensive (the price for this service was a minimum of $10,000)!

Salesforce native data backup tools:

Salesforce Recycle Bin:

In order to protect users from accidentally losing data, Salesforce provides a Recycle Bin! So, if you have lost an important data, you do have the option of restoring that data from the recycle bin provided you have sufficient right. But there is a catch, that there are limitations to the Recycle Bin: Like for an example, this data is only available for 15 days.

Other Salesforce alternatives:

Salesforce also offers few native data backup options like the Data Export Services, Data Loader, or the Report Export which are all tedious, time consuming and involves lot of manual tasks.

Also, these native tools don’t deliver the level of backup and recovery capabilities that you have long been accustomed to or need for a mission-critical application like Salesforce.

The lack of high-quality backup and recovery can put your RPO and RTO service level agreements (SLAs) at greater risk.
