One of the things that is mentioned a lot on these forums is the Enterprise Vault Outlook Add-in. But what is it?
In a nutshell the Enterprise Vault Outlook Add-in provides a number of abilities to Outlook users:
Possibly the most common thing that it allows you to do is to retrieve items that have been archived. The Add-in is closely integrated with Outlook so when you double click on an item which is archived Outlook passes control to the Add-in and the Add-in then performs a number of actions which eventually include displaying the retrieved version of the archived item.
It has other actions such as archiving, restoring, deleting, cancelling, PST migration, searching and an Archive Explorer component which allows the archive to be viewed along with it's structure.
The Add-in is governed by the Enterprise Vault Desktop Policy associated with the users mailbox and archive. This policy controls which options are available on the Outlook ribbon (Outlook 2010 and higher) or the Outlook toolbar (Outlook 2007 and lower), and it controls other things like Vault Cache and Virtual Vault. They too are part of the Outlook Add-in.
Until just recently there were two types of Outlook Add-in, a 'full' Outlook Add-in (also known as the DCOM Add-in) and a 'light' Outlook Add-in (also known as the HTTP Add-in). The Add-ins offered slightly different functionality, with some things not being possible in the HTTP Add-in (such as viewing the Enterprise Vault tab on the properties of a folder in Outlook). The HTTP Add-in was needed though if you wanted to use Outlook 2010. There were also different versions of the Add-in for different languages.
With Enterprise Vault 10.0.2 all this has changed, and finally been drawn together in to one Add-in. Just one! Now all you need is to install that one MSI file on any supported version of Outlook with any (supported) language.
What happens if the Client isn't installed ? I mean, which features will be disable for the user. Please notice that I don't want to user to archive the items manually.

If you don't have the EV Outlook Add-in installed then you won't be able to:
- retrieve an archived item by double clicking on the shortcut. You will be able to open the shortcut, then depending on the settings (and whether or not a link to the archived item is included in the shortcut) you will be able to open the archived item from there - but it's not a nice experience for the end-user.
- use Virtual Vault or Vault Cache
- use Archive Explorer or Search
- archive or restore archived items.
Put it around a different way what do you want end-users to be able to do?
Does EV server hesitate to archive mail boxes which doesn’t have outlook EV plug in installed ?
nope, the two items are not related. if a mailbox is enabled in EV then it can be eligible for archiving based on the policies assigned to it. you use the word hesitate so i'm guessing you mean some sort of priority? the client side doesnt control anything like that.
What AndrewB said is correct. The Outlook Addin is purely for end-users. The Enterprise Vault server doesn't need or use it, nor does it need to be installed on an end-users machine for archiving to take place (according to policy and schedule)

Yes... and maybe, and no
Outlook 2010 needs the HTTP add-in and which versions will work depends on the client and EV server versions. The best bet is to look at the Enterprise Vault Compatibility Charts.
Hello -- want to go a bit deeper on the add-in.
In my environment, we archived the email message plus the attachment, but left the entire email message text/body in Outlook. If the EV Outlook add-in is installed, at what point does the user actually access their vault -- only when needing to open an archived attachment? Or any time they double-click to open an archived message (attachment or not)?
When users get new workstations the add-in isn't installed by default. The user doesn't know it until they try to access an attachment, which they can only get via the add-in, so I'm leaning towards the vault is only accessed when an attachment is needed.
This is the corporate and we are using EV . as per company policy every 7 data will auto archive to EV . so what i want to know form where i can find the arhived items apart from EV .
will it get save in any other storage place if it not possible then once disable EV from where i can access my archived mails .
My company uses EV to archive outlook emails. I don't have the EV add-in installed.
Where can I download the add-in. Also please let me know if it is a straight install after i download?
