About article TECH153333...

Hi,

I don't understand this article http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH153333

I have issue where users on a foreign site cannot access archived items through outlook or the link http://evserver/EnterpriseVault/ArchiveExplorerUi.asp.

With AD guy we checked all GPO policys etc that can possibly affect this but none repaired the issue.

They have outlook anywhere in use and I have set RPC over HTTP connectio = Direct and RPC over HTTP restrictions = None.

For the users in this foreign site outlook gives message "There is no connection to the Enterprise Vault server. Try again later." and if tried the link for some reason it does not stay in "Trusted sites" though it's verified to be there but goes internet connection and fails because the internet is not yet configured to work... Now all the other sites around other countries, everything works just fine inside the company network, and I can see that this user is in company network because the intranet sites open normally and she is using ethernet cable... so...  obviously adding the "RPC over HTTP proxy URL" setting is not necessary 'cause it's not configured yet? right?

Please help me out here :)

would be much appreciated

Hi Sani,

OK....my questions to you, before we go further:

1. With Outlook Anywhere configured and setup, EV retrieval and restore does not work when the users are from external or internal, I am a bit confused reading your post :-), sorry?

2. As per the technote above tha you referenced, have you setup the RPC over HTTP proxy URL settings to https://webmail.domain.com/enterprisevault?

3. With Archive Explorer and Search externally, you need the link stranslation in place to translate http://evserver.domain.local/enterprisevault to https://webmail.domain.com/enterprisevault this is normally done by the ISA/TMG server. This is the same for Outlook Anywhere and OWA if you are using the same web listener on the ISA/TMG server. As you know, Search and Archive Explorer connect directly to the EV server in exchange 2007/2010 (with OWA and Outlook Anywhere).

4. I remember you asked about this https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/about-configuring-isatmg-internet-access-ev-archive. So I assumed you have ISA in place, have you set all this up correctly now? If you do then you should set the  "RPC over HTTP connection" policy is set to "Proxy".

Also if you could trace the client and post the trace so I can check. But I am quite certain that in the client trace you'll see the user is trying to connect http://evserver/EnterpriseVault which will fail and then it will try to use https://webmail.domain.com/enterprisevault because it detects the RPC over HTTPS config and this should now work (i.e. give a successful connection). If this also fails then you need to check the config on the ISA/TMG and EV server.

Thanks,

Chau

1. With Outlook Anywhere configured and setup, does normal retrieval and restore works?

I'm pretty sure the user mentioned that restoring produced error message "Could not process the selected items. Reason: The request has timed out." Will check this again from the user.

2. As per the technote, have you setup the RPC over HTTP proxy URL settings to https://webmail.domain.com/enterprisevault?

No it's empty at the moment and also in article it says: (There is no need to add /Enterprise Vault if a direct connection is in use)

3. With Archive Explorer and Search externally, you need the link stranslation in place to translate http://evserver.domain.local/enterprisevault to https://webmail.domain.com/enterprisevault? this is normally done by the ISA/TMG server. As you know, Search and Archive Explorer connect directly to the EV server in exchange 2007/2010 (with OWA and Outlook Anywhere). Alternatively you need to publish the EV server using a separate external IP.

This is yet to be done so those would work from internet BUT it's not yet and that's not the issue. Issue is that it's not working INSIDE the company network in certain site but is working for all the other sites so I cannot believe that would affect and not sure that the problem is in EV setups at all because as I said with these setups the archive is working just fine for every one else in the world... (offices in more than one country and just one has problems).

4. I remember you asked about this https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/about-configuring-isatmg-internet-access-ev-archive. So i assumed you have ISA in place, have you all this setup correctly now? If you do then you should set the  "RPC over HTTP connection" policy is set to "Proxy".

No ISA has not been configured for EV yet because the ISA used is shared for several clients so it has raced some questions as how to do this. (This is an issue I might have to ask more later).

Ah...OK so this is not working internally, and we have not even got that far yet...I see...

In that case, the things to do from the location that does not work. Normal checks:

1. Check that users can access http://evserver.domain.local/enterprisevault via internet explore?

2. Can the users ping and telnet (via port 80) the EV server's alias, hostname and IP address etc?

3. Client trace it's probably the best thing to get, also get a client trace for a user that works in a different location so we can do a comparision.

I only thing that I think of will be the network configuration between that location and the EV server location, such as firewall etc.

Hope that helps.
