Archiving mailboxes whose AD accounts have been deleted

Hi folks

we are migrating from Exchange 2000 to 2003 and are achiving mailboxes prior to migration to cut down on timescales and to help enforce new mailbox limits.
We have a lot of mailboxes of users who have left the company but we are obligated to keep this information for a number of years.
Can these mailboxes be archived (in full) depsite the AD account being deleted?

Cheers for any advice

Rick.

You said "depsite the AD account being deleted".

Maybe the AD account is hidden from the Global Address List or just disabled?

I am not sure of a way that the mailbox still resides without an AD account.

If you had somehow deleted the AD account but the mailbox remains then you must re-associate these mailboxes with an AD account using the Exchange System Manager.  Enterprise Vault requires that the mailbox be listed in the Global Address List in order to enable and archive the mailbox.

If the AD accounts are disabled or hidden from the Global Address List then you must unhide them in order to enable them for archiving.

Here is a TechNote that may assist you with your questions further:

To check if the Mailbox is hidden in the GAL.

You will have to re-create the AD accounts.  You can get the mbconn.exe utility from Microsoft that will allow you to create the user accounts in bulk based on the mailbox details.  I have about 2000 mailboxes with no associated user accounts as well.  The utility will first create the user account and then allow you to re-connect those accounts with the respective mailbox.

Hope this helps.
