Continual Database Fragmentation

We are having a lot of index fragmentation in our SMTP and Exchange Vault Store databases. Every night the maintenance plan runs an index re-org which brings fragmentation into a sub-5% realm. However fragmentation is rising at such a rate that we're getting alarms. Maintenance runs at 2am, then by noon fragmentation is up to 80%.

Is this to be expected or is it atypical?

Hi there,

This is expected in large/busy environments. As long as you do the defragmentation daily, there should be no problem. 

However, you may want to schedule an offline defragmentation as well once a month or so if the fragmentation doesn't go down.
