Enterprise Vault 9 and Exchange 2010 Single Item Recovery

I was wondering if anyone else has seen the following behavior, or if someone from Symantec could verify the product works in this manner. We have Single Item Recovery enabled in our Exchange 2010 environment. What we started to notice is that the size of some of our mail databases started to balloon, and it didn't appear to be the cause of a huge increase in e-mail. For example, one of our databases was over 90 GB, but if you added the sizes of each mailbox in the database, it should have been closer to 35 GB.

We turned our attention to the Recoverable Items area of the mailboxes, and it was there that we found the culprit. In the Versions folder, there were multiple copies of items which were archived, as well as a pending copy, and a stubbed copy. So for example, for an original 1 MB e-mail, there would be the original e-mail at 1 MB, four copies each at 1 MB, a pending archive item at 1 MB, and a stubbed item at 4 KB in the Versions folder. We are seeing the same behavior both when we stub items after backup, or immediately. Although these extra messages are not computed into the size of the mailbox, they are included in the overall size of the database which explains the disrepancy.

I appreciate any comments people may have.

Thanks.

Yup same issue here and that is just the behavior of exchange and there isn't any way around it
your best bet would be to start using virtual vault and not to use shortcuts at all and only have EV archive large and older items, otherwise theres little you can do if you want to keep single item recovery
