Enterprise Vault (EV) for Domino is fully compatible and fully supported with Lotus Domino Attachment and Object Service (DAOS).
Essentially when a third party product such as (EV) or anti-virus calls a particular noteid with in a mail file (DAOS) will serve the full recombined document back to that application for processing. In the case of (EV) during an archiving run the fully recombined document with its associated attachment will be served to (EV) by (DAOS). (EV) will then take the full document and process it for single instancing and store it within (EV). The fully recombined document is stored and indexed in (EV). The EV for Domino archiving task will then go back and delete and replace the noteid (including the DAOS ticket) with an (EV) shortcut. This shortcut deletion and replacement by the archiving task generates a delete notification to DAOS which will then remove the attachment reference in the DAOS database for that particular mail file. The stored DAOS attachment will not be removed from DAOS until all references that attachment have been removed.
From this point forward any retrieval of the (EV) archived items will only occur with (EV) and its processes. Once the item is archived retrievals of archived items have no interaction with (DAOS). The process works in the same manner as an end user who does not have (EV) enabled. Imagine an end user without (EV) who decides to copy an item from their (DAOS) enabled mail.nsf to a local nsf. At that point the fully recombined item will be copied to the local NSF. If the user then deleted that item from their (DAOS) enabled mail file the (DAOS) nsf would be updated in the same manner. AS (DAOS) was released with Domino 8.5 we recommend upgrading your target servers to at least Domino 8.5.2 as this feature has matured in later releases.
When troubleshooting (EV) and (DAOS) enabled mail items the first step is to verify DAOS is working properly for specific items. If the issue relates to archiving the entire content of a particular item attempt to forward that item to a non-DAOS enable mail file to ensure that the full item is in fact being forwarded. If the full item is not forwarded then the issue lies within (DAOS) and (EV) can be eliminated as the cause.
