Anyone had this when trying to perform manual operations with the DCOM client? If I switch them to HTTP client it works fine. The on-site admin verified DCOM is operational (Well, I have to take their word for it.), there are no firewalls between the clients and the EV servers.

An error occurred while processing the selected item

Error Description: 0x80070005: Access is denied.

A client log shows the following.

Well this was rediculous. After countless assurances from the site admin that DCOM was enabled, I opened a ticket with Microsoft PSS and they found it was turned off. Grrrr. All he checked was that the service itself was turned on, and never went into DCOMCNFG like I said to.

Brian,

0x80070005 are normally indicative of DCOM errors. Is the local DCOM enabled on the client? Can you set the trace to level 4 and repeat the process. Also, which processes give you the errors?

Hi Mark,

The site-admin with access to the client machine claims DCOM is enabled and working. If you've got a good way to verify this 100% through a script or utility then I'll pass it onto him. I've requested he resend me the log at level 4. The above error he says was generated doing a manual recover from the user's vault, but pretty much any manual operation for a handful this admin's users. When I hear handful I start thinking his clients have a DCOM issue.

Level 4 log with our identifying info replaced with benign stuff. Lets see how much the forum software wants to mangle it. :) One thing I noticed is he is using hte SP1 client. I asked him to upgrade to SP2.

I can see you are doing the full client
"Enterprise Vault Client 7.5.1.1397.0 (Full)"
 
So it will be trying to do DCOM calls to EV.
I can also see that there are errors loading retention categories (which is a DCOM call)
so I would suggest that DCOM or something similar is what's causing the issue.
 
Is DCOM still enabled on the EV server?

Hi Dodo,

Spot checking the server appears DCOM as enabled/working. I just tried restoring an item with a test account on the same EV server these particular users are having trouble with. The restore failed for me as well, but a manual archive appears to have worked as the pending icon is there right now. My own EV client w/DCOM works fine on this machine on another EV server, so am confident my client machine is ok.

Ok some more data;


Last night I was logged on as UserA, launching Outlook 2007 as UserA, but opening a profile of UserB's mailbox and providing their credentials when Outlook opened. I gave UserA permissions to UserB's vault so I could do anything. This is when the error happened.


Today I am still logged on as UserA, but launching Outlook 2007 as UserB through "run-as". I get 0 errors using DCOM and retreiving an item in this manner.

Brian,

Look in the system log of the EV server - can you see any DCOM errors (this will be where they are logged). If in doubt raise a support call.

The client trace is showing access denied errors (the 0x80070005) and these just smack of DCOM. Look for event ids from the DCOM source. If you find any, they will prob say something like "remote launch denied" or something like that, this M$ article may help - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/899965

Well this was rediculous. After countless assurances from the site admin that DCOM was enabled, I opened a ticket with Microsoft PSS and they found it was turned off. Grrrr. All he checked was that the service itself was turned on, and never went into DCOMCNFG like I said to.
