Services won't start / limit on number of services

Just wondering if anyone has seen this one.

EV 5 SP3 running on W2K SP4

Old story: everything was running fine when at some point some of the EV services decided not to start anymore. There are about 34 EV-related services installed on this box including Admin, Storage, Directory, Indexing, Shopping...

As one can expect, many of these are Archiving and Retrieval and a number of them are currently disabled.

The issue is that we can only start a limited number of EV related services on the server, after which point any other EV service we try to start fails with the not so helpful 7009 timeout waiting for service to start.

The interesting thing is that all of the services are working properly, you just have to pick the ones you want to start below the "problem threshold" and they work just fine. The limit of services seems to be consistent around 10/11.

There are no other errors logged anywhere. Dtrace verbose doesn't even get to log anything as the service seems to die before it gets to that point.

Generally speaking memory and other resources seem to be fine on the server and other non-EV related services can be started without a problem even after the 10/11 EV services are already running.

Ideas?

Hi,

Found it. It's to do with this SharedSection registry key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\SubSystems\ Windows SharedSection

Do some googling on that reg key for recommendations.

You are probably running into limitations in regards to Mapi. EV 6 would help alleviate this a bit, as the retrieval services are part of the archive task.

How many exchange servers/ users are you archiving against?

Yes. I would be nice to go to V6 but we can't do it right now. :)

The interesting thing is that all of the services were starting just fine a little while ago. We are archiving/retrieving against some 5-6 Exchange Servers - not really all that much.

Another interesting thing to your suggestion is that there are no MAPI errors logged anywhere.

Hi,

This is a known issue with so many services.

I'm trying to see if I can find the windows registry key for this.

Now that would make for a great weekend!
