Using Outlook without the client installed

Hey guys,

Environment is EV 9.0.4, Exchange 2010 and users on Outlook 2003 SP3.

I have a situation where another department is merging into our mail environment and they are going to be enabled for archiving due to the size of the mailboxes.

The problem is they have Internet Explorer 6 and they need this for another important application to work.

So in my test environment I am playing around a mailbox which doesn’t have the EV Client installed.

So I can use the URL to see their archives, I can open an archived message by double clicking and then clicking on view the original item and then I can forward an email.

In the URL //evserver/enterprisevault/archiveexplorerui.asp I can change the settings to view archived items using Microsoft Outlook, which opens it as a .msg file and then I can forward from there as well.

If they wanted to save it into a document system then they could use the .msg file they have downloaded.

I cannot restore items back to the mailbox.

I know this is not an ideal situation but I have no option but to enable them for archiving.

These are the limitations I have found so far, can anyone see any other issues that I may have regarding this configuration?

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH72900 The client is part of the main download, it won't support Outlook 2010 or 2013 But for outlook 2003 and 2007 it's fine

You pointed out the main limitations, not being able to use the buttons or just double-clicking on a shortcut.

You could a link to the shortcut so the users can view the archived items that way.  I would love to know what application they are using that requires IE 6.

Pretty sure you can use the EV 2007 client? No?

Not sure what app Tony, but lets hope they upgrade it soon.

JW, where could I get a copy of the 2007 client to do a test with?

If extension are not installed then EV functionality would not be available as you just said.

You can also try to create different mailbox policy (for department which is in process of merging) which have shortcut creation policy to include link to original item.

So when user see the shortcut, they can access archived item while clicking on link.

It certainly doesn't help you that version of EV or Outlook, but there is the Outlook Web App integration that can flow through to Outlook 2013.  You don't need the Add-in installed then, and you get the 'proper' EV functionality.

JW, that client does work and I am able to restore from vault.

I will continue to test to see if this will work in our environment.

Thanks very much for your help, much appreciated.
