Using both SQL 2000 and 2005 for EV DB's

Hi guys, I have a customer that has multiple SQL servers in different locations, and would like to use both versions of SQL (2000 and 2005) for the same EV installation. 
 
My questions are, can we use, say, one version of SQL for the directory DB, and another version of SQL for a vault store DB?
