Veritas Named a 2020 Gartner Peer Insights “Customers’ Choice” for File Analysis Software

Level 2

At Veritas, the success of our customers is always a top priority. That’s why our team was so excited to learn we have been recognized as a “Customers’ Choice” for File Analysis software in Gartner’s July 2020 Gartner Peer Insights ‘Voice of the Customer’: File Analysis Software.

I enjoy browsing through real customer reviews. In Gartner’s own words, thesegartner_message_355x355.jpg include “more than 340,000 reviews across more than 340 markets. The Voice of the Customer is a document that synthesizes Gartner Peer Insights’ reviews into insights for IT decision-makers."

There’s a wealth of good information there, and the reviews are easy to read and navigate. You can check it out for yourself at

Within the Veritas Enterprise Data Services Platform (EDSP) we’ve worked hard to align Data Insight to solve our customers’ complex data challenges – helping them expose potential data liabilities, know where important or sensitive data exists, and predict problems before they happen. For example, Data Insight uses deep learning technologies to generate a proprietary data risk score between 1-100, helping administrators spot data risk early. In short, the offering scans data environments for metadata and permissions and ‘listens’ for access events from configured devices.

Our vision for Data Insight is to allow IT Data Management teams to distribute responsibility concerning data - like access to sensitive files – appropriately within their organizations. This requires knowledge of who should be the owner or custodian of each item of data and should be responsible for effective remediation. We call this Inferred Ownership of data. However, with millions or billions of files spread across the organization, it is an impossible task for IT managers without help. Data Insight solves this challenge by determining inferred ownership of data and by providing the ability to assign data custodians. Rather than assigning ownership to the creator, Data Insight uses sophisticated algorithms to look at user activity, behavior on files, and file access events to identify ownership of files. Inferred data ownership can be easily viewed in management dashboards or through reports to help ultimately reducing data risk and providing a more ‘pro-active’ approach to data management.

It’s also great to see how many of our Peer Insights customers are using Data Insight in a variety of ways:

  • Improving data management - Discovering stale and orphaned data, often called Dark Data. Data Insight helps understand usage and consumption patterns, which optimizes storage costs and reduces data center energy waste.
  • Simplifying compliance archiving – Identifying data owners that need to be engaged in compliance efforts and automating data entitlement and access reviews. Tight integration with Veritas Enterprise VaultTM supports compliance archiving efforts by providing audit access to data for confidentiality and integrity and automating data classification.
  • Automating data classification – The Veritas Information Classifier automates and simplifies the identification of sensitive data for risk mitigation. Think PII identification, electronic patient health information (ePHI/HIPPA), personal data – GDPR conform - for all European countries, California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) support, and brand new COVID-19 diagnostics information and keywords in support of our healthcare clients. Close to 1000 patterns and over 150 pre-configured policies allow customers a fast start in data classification.
  • Protecting data from security risks and improving access control – Finding data at greatest risk of exposure and locking down sensitive data if needed. Determining who is using data and apply user policies. Reducing threats of open shares, unauthorized access, and policy violations. Identifying access patterns, like frequency of data access and protect sensitive data. All integrated into leading Data Loss Prevention solutions.

But enough ‘marketing-speak’. Let me share a few quotes from Gartner’s Peer Insights reviews on Veritas Data Insight.  One of the questions Gartner asks users is “what they like most about the software or service:

  • On improving data management: “Monitor what concerns you, classify as required, and control as needed. … Policy-based access control along with enhanced monitoring capabilities has solved a lot of our issues." Manufacturing Industry
  • On simplifying compliance archiving and data classification: “Data insight is one of the best systems you can have to manage business data with extremely high levels of efficiency, the software allows its users to get full control of all the data they work with. The software is excellent for risk reduction, data classification, and improving analytical accountability. One of the most relevant advantages of Data insight is that it allows you to … reduce costs in unstructured data environments, maintain regulatory compliance for information access, use, and retention.” Communications Industry
  • On protecting data from security risks: “The risk-based approach to every file, folder, and every user uses an advanced, risk-centric algorithm. Data Insight can protect against insider threats in the organization through the multi-dimensional analysis of permissions, deviations, and alerts that are against access policies. This feeds into the user risk scoring that provides information around where to focus for further in-depth analysis.” Healthcare Industry

A big “thank you” to Gartner for tapping directly into the voice of the customer. It’s great to hear how companies are solving their biggest data challenges with Veritas. We’re very excited to continuously help our customers gain broader insight into their unstructured data on-prem and in the cloud.
