HI All
I have few queries regarding AIR.
Is it mendate to use deduplication feature of netbackup with AIR, If yes then why
is it possible to do with the VTL at source Domain ,
Does it need separate license to AIR
If any one can help me to find the document to implement the AIR, it will be very helpfull.
Thakns in Advance

AIR is only supported with dedupe disk - not VTL or tape.
AIR FAQ: http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH154323
Config in chapter 15 of Admin Guide 1 (Duplicating images to a remote master server domain):
NBU Admin Guide for UNIX and Linux, Volume I http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC3650
NBU Admin Guide for Windows, Volume I http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC3653
Enterprise Disk license and/or Dedupe license is needed.
Once OST is supported, only Ent Disk will be needed.
For MSDP, you need NBU Dedupe license.

THANKS, I will go through these docs.

Is it possible to Implement without dedupe disk, can we do it with simple disk storage unit ?
05-22-2012 10:30 AM
Not possible.
Firstly, AIR is configured using SLP. Basic Disk is not supported with Basic Disk.
Secondly, Dedupe disk is needed for AIR. Requirements/supported configurations are documented in the links that I have posted above.

Can anybody please let me know how to create a MSDP (Media Server Deduplication Pool), Can it be created on san storage space by using deduplication license. If yes , then what all requirements for it ...

I have one tuto here:

Sorry, this old one is commented in French but i think i could really help.

Best to read through the Dedupe Guide as well as Additional Dedupe info doc.
Most important part of the process is careful planning - from media server resources, network bandwith, disk layout, etc....
Planning and config details are all the manuals:
NBU Deduplication Guide http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC3657
NBU Deduplication: Additional Info http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH77575

thnaks Marianne, but i am still confused about, is it possible to create a MSDP by using dedup license and SAN storage sapce for disk pool ..
And I have two Master server with 32 GB RAM , 1 physical processor with 8 processor , using them as media server also, @ NBU 7.1 , 2 NICs Each with 1000 Mbps speed Full Duplex.. Can I create MSDP on them with out effecting there performance much..?

All your questions are answered in the manuals:
Licensing:
Chapter 4 of http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC3657
San Storage:
Chapter 3 of http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC3657
Server minimum requirements:
Chapter 2 of http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC3657
It is normally recommended to have media server dedupe separate from master, but should be fine in a small environment. Extract from manual:
Note: In some environments, a single host can function as both a NetBackup
master server and as a deduplication server. Such environments typically run
fewer than 100 total backup jobs a day. (Total backup jobs means backups to any
storage destination, including deduplication and nondeduplication storage.) If
you perform more than 100 backups a day, deduplication operations may affect
master server operations.

Thanks Marianne, I am going through these docs.
But here in our backup environment we are palnning to implemet AIR on two master servers and vice versa (replecating data of each on other one). for this i need two pair of SLP's, each pair will be replacting data on another master server. Just want to know is possible to use single MSDP in both SLP pairs ?
If no then why. If yes, then can i create two MSDP on single media server ?

ONE MSDP per media server..... More than one MSDP per environment needs more than one media server.
Why?
I don't know. Ask Symantec. I just know what is in the manuals..........

Ok, Can I use one MSDP in both pair of SLP's which will be used in two domains to replicate data on each other and vice versa ?

Yes, this will work.
