Backup Catalog files

Hi all,

Have some doubts over the config of backing up catalog files.
Currently my netbackup is has been set in this way, by Veritas authorised agent

After each schedule, user or manual backup , NB will write those catalog files to disk (over written daily). Then another policy named 'Catalog' will backup those files to catalog volume group. Thus creating redundancy incase the catalog tape dies.

any comment on the setup? Is this common?

That is a common and workable solution.

NetBackup prior to version 6.0 had the catalog backup that runs after each schedule, user or manual backup may be of better use if instead you set it to run after only scheduled backups and not after user and manual backups. That will cut down on the number of times it runs. This is a "cold" backup. It is still available in the 6.0 release.

Netbackup 6.0 allowed a hot catalog backup via a NetBackup policy. That can run anytime. This is a long looked for improvement to NetBackup and is a welcome site to see.

Your setup is OK

In general, it is ok. Of course depending on different scenario and needs, it can be fine tune (e.g. manually trigger).

If you've any concern in mind, or any idea you want it to be, state your requirements to the forum for further suggestion. Give it a try, people in this forum are quite helpful & knowledgable.

I would just throw in rotate in new catalog tapes on occasion and send the old ones offsite. They will be out of date but it is good to have some spares that are not on site just on case.

Anytime tapes are sent offsite they should be accompanied by a catalog tape.
