Backup Status or Tracking

I need a way to be notified of our nightly backups including database and file systems.  Currently this is done manually by looking in the activity monitor and filtering on various fields.  We don't have many policies, but we have multiple databases on multiple servers in a single policy.  How can I do this?  Any ideas or help would be appreciated.  We are currently runnning master on Windows 2003 server and Media on 2 HPUX servers.  Our backups are mainly Unix/Windows File systems and Oracle/SQL Databases (including logs).

This is written for UNIX but you should be able to understand the concepts and port it to windows on your own.
