Connection problems between DataDomain applicance and Netbackup Media server

I have a problem with one of the DataDomain appliances.

From the media server I can navigate to it no problem:

DD560DR1:/backup     16599559680 10510207488 6089352192  64% /dd/DD560DR1/backup
DD560DR1:/ddvar       82569920   6606656  71768960   9% /dd/DD560DR1/ddvar

[root@eslin201 /]# cd /dd/DD560DR1/backup
[root@eslin201 backup]# ls
ddms  exchangeHQ  mercury   mercuryHQ  netbackupHQ  test        unix565hq2  windows        windows565hq2
dev   legacy_dev  mercury2  netbackup  sapHQ        unix565hq1  vmware      windows565hq1
[root@eslin201 backup]# pwd
/dd/DD560DR1/backup

But when I try and run a backup in Netbackup to this device I am getting this error in Netbackup:

27-Jul-2010 10:08:40 - Error nbjm (pid=4522) NBU status: 2074, EMM status: Disk volume is down
Disk volume is down  (2074)

All other backups across this media server to normal disk pools and tape are working fine.

Netbackup v6.5.6 on Redhat v2.6

Well it is working again now.

I downed the media server, with the media server down rebooted the Data Domain, restarted back the media server, checked all of Netbackup processes running, mounted the Data Domain using normal Linux mount command and now my Data Domain Storeage units work OK.

When I do the 'nbdevquery -listdp' command the 'basic disk' Data Domain is not showed and I can only see my advance disk.

No real idea what was wrong which is frustrating, will speak to the engineer who implemented the Data Domain into Netbackup and ask him. Will feed it back to the forum if he gives me a decent explanation.

Many thanks for the replys

Write permissions on the NFS mount?
Can you create a new folder in /dd/DD560DR1/backup, e.g. mkdir /dd/DD560DR1/backup/eslin201 ?

Has this DSU worked before on this media server? If so, any errors in Disk Logs Report?

Have you verified PBX connectivity between Master and Media server?

Hi Thanks for the reply

I can create a new folder from the media server onto the onto the mounted appliance using Linux.

I have tried running the bperror -disk command on the media server and I cannot see any errors:

[root@eslin201 admincmd]# ./bperror -disk | grep 560DR1
1280219970 1 1668 4 eslin201 168753 168751 0 eslin200 bptm begin writing backup id eslin200_1280219957, copy 1, fragment 1, destination path /dd/DD560DR1/backup/netbackupHQ

But in the backup job from the GUI it just fails with '1: (2074) Disk volume is down'

PBX is running, and I have done backups over this media server to other storage units (non Data Domain). Also when doing a bpps-x all other process appear to be OK.

The DataDomains are all configured as 'Basic Disk' and I am thinking that I need to use the nbdevconfig command to use reset the state of the disk, but I am not sure what to enter as the disk pool name (-dp).

I have rebooted the DataDomain and the media server and it is still in the same state. Running out of things to try now.

Thanks

[root@eslin201 /]# /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/admincmd/nbdevquery -listdp
V6.5.5 AdvDiskPool_1 1 34162.23 34162.23 10 98 80 -1 eslin201
V6.5.5 AdvDiskPool_2 1 34359.09 34359.09 10 98 80 -1 eslin202
V6.5.5 AdvDiskPool_3 1 34359.09 34359.09 10 98 80 -1 eslin203

I can only see my advanced disk pools, (normal san disk) but my data domain is configured as basic disk, should this command show me basic disk as well?

thanks

Hello,

I wonder if you are satisfied with how your DD appliance work and you take advantage of optimized duplication feature. This new approach looks promising and I'd like to know whether someone have "success story" about optimized duplication with DD boxes.

Check to see if Disk pools are still configured for the AdvancedDisk storage server:
# /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/admincmd/nbdevquery -listdp -stype AdvancedDisk
