Dedup variable length segments: which apps/file types profit?

Hi folks,

the question came up whether there are any guidelines on what type of files and which applications profit from a better dedup ratio using variable length segments or is it purely trial and error by evaluating the job details etc?

Any comments are appreciated :)

Hi @bert_geiger 

I don't think anything has changed from fixed block deduplication besides you will get a slightly better dedupe ration using variable length dedupe on the cost of more CPU usage.

The deduplication has a instruction on monitoring  efficiency : Monitoring the MSDP deduplication rate | Monitoring deduplication activity | Veritas NetBackup™ Dedu... 

You could set up two test MSDP pools, and then backup the same data twice, one with variable and the other with fixed with dedupe.
