Hi All,

Anyone know how to set up VTL on Netbackup 5.1 or 6.0, Where could I get documentation? Thanks.

Look into the documentation came along with your VTL. NetBackup sees it as normal drive, it does not know if it is a virtual drive or real drive. As long as your SCSI/Fibre driver configuration is updated and emulation type you are using on VTL is supported by NetBackup you don't require any special setup.

Do you have any doc on it?

Hi Tom,

As mentioned by Rakesh, there isn't any doc that list down the steps from end-to-end what requires for configuring VTL. Basically you need to refer to the VTL manual for configuring the VTL to present its "media", "drives" and "robotic control" to Netbackup server. And refer to NB SysAdmin Guide to configure the devices into netbackup, you can refer to the chapter "Managing Storage Unit" of this document:
VERITAS NetBackup (tm) 5.1 System Administrator's Guide, Volume I for Windows
http://support.veritas.com/docs/268192
VERITAS NetBackup (tm) 6.0 System Administrator's Guide for Windows, Volume 1 http://support.veritas.com/docs/279265

Hey Tom,
As the other gentlemen stated; there's not a VTL admin guide. If I'm correct you need to address the following:
-License for using a VTL in Netbackup
-What kind of filer do you have? How is it attached? Is it zoned to see your backup master/media servers and vice versa?
-If the above is all true, then have you configured your VTL on the disk filer you are using?
-If the above conditions have been met then your master/media server should see the VTL and drives, which means that they can be configured in netbackup.

As metnioned earlier, NetBackup does not have any setup guide/doc for VTL. Your VTL vendor provides you one. As long as you are able to see the deives at OS level, you can configure these just like any other device you configure in NetBackup. Consult your media manager guide. In addition to it you should have a valid VTL license (as Alex has mentioned). You can check it by running get_license_key under admincmd directory. If you have a valid license you will see soemthing like this -

Feature: Virtual Tape (Active)

You may want to update device mapping file for NetBackup, just in case you are using one of the latest VTL. Below are the links for 5.x and 6.0 for both Windows and Linux/Unix -

The Netbackup VTL license is licensed per 1 TB.
