Netbackup 6.5.6 - Restore fail

db_232

Hello,

I'm trying to restore a windows server 2003 image file from my backup server, running netbackup 6.5.6. This backup image contains microsoft exchange.

The restore fails on the destination computer when "restoring shadow components". Giving the following error: "Failed to restore system files, rc=3. Verify Netbackup configuration and retry".

This is the log on the server: (2 attemps)

"cannot connect to bpcd on exgserver"

Are you trying to do a full system restore?

Is NBU installed and Client Service running on exgserver? Forward and reverse hostname lookup working in all directions?

Was backup done using Fibre Transport method?

Yes I'm trying to do a full metal restore on a new machine, with the same hardware.

Forward and reverse hostname is working on both the exchange server as well as the backup server. However the backup server is taken off the network while doing the restore and connected only to the computer it is going to be restored on. This is done so the restore doesnt affect the production server.

I am basically doing a test backup in case something goes wrong. This has worked for 4 other servers except this one.

Not sure about the fibre transport?

Let's have a look at the connection problem first - since your master and client are off the main network, it means you don't have DNS for name lookup, right? Do you have hosts entries on master and client?

Please do the following: on client, create bpcd log dir (and tar as well for possible later restore troubleshooting).

On the master, do the following from cmd:
bptestbpcd -client exgserver -verbose

Please post output as well as client's bpcd log.

To solve the Fiber Transport error, do the follwing on the master:

Go to Host Properties -> Master Server -> Properties -> Fiber Transport. Select "Never" and restart the NetBackup services

For full system restore without BMR, use this TN: http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH56473

The appropriate host entries on the master and client server have already been added.

Here is the output from bptestbpcd -client exgserver -verbose on the master server:

1 1 1
192.168.1.3:54419 -> 192.168.1.1:13724
192.168.1.3:54420 -> 192.168.1.1:13724
PEER_NAME = backup
HOST_NAME = exgserver
CLIENT_NAME = exgserver
VERSION = 0x06540000
PLATFORM = win_x64
PATCH_VERSION = 6.5.6.0
SERVER_PATCH_VERSION = 6.5.6.0
MASTER_SERVER = backup
EMM_SERVER = backup
192.168.1.3:54421 -> 192.168.1.1:13724

I cannot do this on the client because there I am doing a bare metal restore from a disc.

As for the fiber transport, I dont see the tab?

First time you mention Bare Metal Restore...

I will humbly bow out as BMR is not my strong point...

About Fibre Transport - this is where it is supposed to show up in Master server Host Properties:

Hmm strange, it is missing?

Thanks alot for your help so far.

Looks like your backup image on a FT Media server which is not on the network. Can you please confirm that the client and media server where the backup image resides and the master server communicate well over network.

Thanks
