Question about VMWare backups

Michael_Fisher

We are presently running 6.5.6 and backing up the VM servers (all Windows servers) the same way we backup a physical server. When we upgrade to 7.x, we would like to backup the entire VMWare system and be able to restore individual files to each VM server. We want to use VSphere and not VCB.

We have purchased the Enterprise client in preparation for the VMWare backups. Do we install the Linux client on the VMWare hardware? Any guidance is appreciated

Hi,

For vSphere you don't need to install anything on the ESX hosts. You simply give NetBackup access to the vCenter via a user account. It will then connect to the vCenter and see where all the VM guests are, datastore locations, esx hosts, etc etc.

If you like you can give NetBackup (a windows server running netbackup server software) access to datastores on a SAN level. It will then pull the vmdk's across the SAN, at a higher transfer rate. If you don't give SAN access it will connect via the LAN.

Those are the basics. You basically only need to buy the license to unlock the features, it doesn't involve any software installation on Vmware hosts.
