Skipped databases while doing a MS SQL database backup.

Hello,

Here's the problem:
While doing a MS SQL database backup, the temporary batch file generates a list of all databases (let’s say they are 20), after that the backup starts, the first 2 databases each generates a job and finishes with success. However the rest of the databases (18 more) do not generate a job each but instead the master job completes with status 0 - "the requested operation was successfully completed (0)".
I've enabled and checked all kind of logs I could think of and wasn't able to find any reason for this to happen.

Here are some environment details:

- NBU master (and media) server is HPUX OS, version 6.5.4
- Client server is win 2003, NBU client version 6.5.4

Any ideas what could be the reason and where to look at?

Thank you forward.

This is a "feature" lol, our SQL DBA found it, do we get a cookie?

Check your stripes and other memory settings, since that can also impact this.

Here is the alert they sent out:

This is to inform you that Symantec Corporation has just issued a Software Alert. This is a critical technical issue for:

-NetBackup Enterprise Server 6.5 through 6.5.5 on Supported Windows platforms

For complete details and our recommendations, please visit the following reference document:

When a large number of databases are enumerated in an SQL batch file, or when the DATABASE $ALL wildcard is used to enumerate a large number of databases, some databases are skipped and not all databases are backed up. No failure is reported in the Activity Monitor.

http://entsupport.symantec.com/docs/330033

This Software Alert was delivered because responsiveness to customers and product quality are consistent Symantec Corporation hallmarks. Any issue that could potentially affect the integrity of data in your environment, no matter how rare, is viewed as extremely important.

Thank you for choosing Symantec.

 Sincerely,

 Symantec

Will you please post the .bch file that you are using?

You will need to compare .bch file with dbclient log file on client - each database specified in batch file will be listed in log file with result for each of them.

Hello,

I've reistalled the client software (just to be sure). The next attempt managed to backup 6 of 25 databases.
Also, missed to mention that its a SQL cluster server.

Here's some comprehensive data (server names were replaced with standard one):

The template I'm using:

C:\Program Files\Veritas\NetBackup\DbExt\MsSql\sqlscript_db_1.bch :
----------

OPERATION BACKUP
DATABASE $ALL
SQLHOST "CLIENTSQL01"
NBSERVER "NBUMASTER01"
MAXTRANSFERSIZE 6
BLOCKSIZE 7
BROWSECLIENT "CLIENTSQL01"
NUMBUFS 2
ENDOPER TRUE

----------

Here's the generated template:

Another workaround for this issue is to break up large backup jobs into smaller jobs handling less databases.
