Trouble installing NBU 7.1 client on AIX6.1

kenlee_au

Hi,

I am having issues installing the RS6000 client onto an AIX 6.1 server. I have run the install_client and get this error:

/bk/aix53 @ cp version /usr/openv/netbackup/
/bk/aix53 @ install_client

/usr/openv/netbackup/version not found or corrupted.
Unknown hardware type: "7.1"

Prior to that error I had this error:

/usr/openv/netbackup/version not found or corrupted.
Unknown hardware type: ""

To solve this I created the directory /netbackup and copied the version file into it.

Here is a list of the files I have in the install directory:

/bk/aix53 @ ls -al
total 809308

Not sure where to go from here, does not seem to be much inforation around regarding this issue.

I hope someone has seen this before.

Ken.

Please uninstall current installation, ensure openv folder is removed, delete current installation files, extract download using gtar and re-try installation...

See p. 128 and 129 of NBU Installation Guide for UNIX and Linux  http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC3647 for Client uninstall steps.
For Server software uninstall, see p. 94 - 96 of same manual.

Is this a new installation or an upgrade?

Is there a current version file in /usr/openv/netbackup/bin?
If so, compare with version file in installation folder.

version file in /usr/openv/netbackup/ does not seem right - it normally exists only in NBU server installation, not 'pure client'.

If this is Client only (no server software installed), you can try and remove /usr/openv completely, then retry.

The alternative is to use the entire Client package - NetBackup_7.1_CLIENTS.tar.gz - to install.

Just be aware of 'gtar' that must be used to extract software: http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH154080

Hi Marianne,

Thanks for getting back to me.

This is a brand new install and only a pure client, our media centre is a Windows machine.

I will try to use the entire client package and let you know how it goes.

Thanks,

Ken.

How does the version file look like?

Find out how a version file normally look like in below technote, check the "HARDWARE" line:

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH62287

If necessary, "fix" the format of version file and try again.

Hi all,

Just an update, we got past the version file error by growing our /tmp directory. We found that this was too small for the install.

Since then we run the install and get an error saying that there are processes running, the problem is that the error does not show what processes are running.

We have stopped anything with pbx in it and stopped them, just wondering what we have missed, it is quite difficult finding the correct processes that may be running when you do not know what to look for.

The error is shown below:

There seems to be a previous version of NBU installed on this machine? Maybe left-over from previous installation attempt?

NetBackup client is currently at release level 7.1.

This package will install NetBackup client 7.1.

NBU client should run no more than these 3 processes:

/opt/VRTSpbx/bin/pbx_exchange
/usr/openv/netbackup/bin/vnetd -standalone
/usr/openv/netbackup/bin/bpcd -standalone

If you could redirect 'ps -ef' output to a text file and post here as attachment.

**** Another thought:

Is there perhaps still left-over tar process from previous failed extract and/or installation?

NBU could probably perceive tar process as NBU restore...

try this:

Stop:
/usr/openv/netbackup/bin/goodies/netbackup stop

Start:
/usr/openv/netbackup/bin/goodies/netbackup start

check if still services run:
/usr/openv/netbackup/bin/bpps

if there is any process still run (except bpps) try this:

ps -ef | grep <service name>.

then complete your installation.

Thanks for the replies Muhanad and Marrianne.

I have confirmed that no services are running after using both of your helpful posts. I have notieced another error being displayed now when installing, it is at the very end of the error trace and reads:

A failure was detected running /home/tmp/NB/NetBackup_7.1_CLIENTS/NBClients/anb/Clients/usr/openv/netbackup/client/RS6000/AIX5
3/cp_to_client media_server_name aix_client_name /tmp/install_trace.868604

Could this be a permission error with it trying to copy stuff to the Windows media server?

And when I try to start netbackup (just to see what happens) I get this below: It seems to be wanting to read the master_config which you would think would come from the master server.

It seems as though the install has happened but the media server has not been communicating back to the AIX client. I will play with permissions on the media server to see if I can turn this around. Any other advice would be greatly appreciated.

I realize that I have mentioned this previously, but did you remember to use gtar to extract the software?

Extract from http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH154080

If this or ANY errors are seen during extraction, installation or upgrade should NOT be attempted!  The procedure will fail and may leave NetBackup (or OpsCenter) in an unusable state which may require a complete uninstallation and reinstallation.

We have seen lots of cp_to_client errors on this forum when gtar was not used to extract software.

The startup script that you are running seems to be a NBU server script. Was media server software previously installed here?
(I do not have access to AIX client to compare.)

Hi Marianne,

Again thanks for your responses.

I found that the software was actually installed and have since uninstalled it. (the issue of having two people at one point looking at the same problem...)

I have just used AIXtar and no change at all, here is the latest install trace and you will notice it looks as though it all goes through ok till the end.

94 - 96 of same manual.

you need to follow Marianne steps, in NBU 7.1 you need to use gtar (AIXtar) to extract the tar file, and to use the AIXtar: (AIXtar xfv  NetBackup_7.1_CLIENTS.tar)

Apologies!!! I now see that the GNU version on AIX is indeed called AIXtar....blush

I posted before I had first cup of coffee........ cheeky

Please double-check version of AIX tar as per TN....

Hello everyone,

Thanks for all your help, it has been great.

Finally got this working, all that was needed was that the /usr/openv directory was deleted and then next time the install was run it worked.
