backup server bus speed...what to look for in purchasing new server

We're in the process of procuring new hardware for our env. and confused what key elements to look for when purchasing new hardware to be used primarily as a backup server.  Is bus speed a factor?  I would think we would want a server that can handle the IO requirements and of course expandibility (number of slots).

Hi Friend,

Before going for the Procurement do the excercise:

1)Examine the throughput of Client with the bpbkar command.

C:\Veritas\Netbackup\bin\bpbkar32 -nocont > NUL 2>

2)Examing the Network connectivity issue(Whether your new server will be flexible with the existing network or not if not try and get the seperate network for the backup itself to have the better performance)

3)calculate the no of drives required to backup the data in the entire site.

Number of drives = (Amount of data to back up) /((Backup window) * (Tapedrive transfer rate))

4)Design an action plan as far as the Backup window is concerned, and inform  everyone about this design.

To calculate the length of your backups using a particular tape drive, use the

formula:

Actual data transfer rate = (Amount of data to back up)/((Number of drives)* (Tape drive transfer rate))

5)Discuss the implementation of Synthetic backup or any other Disk based backups if you get any green signal calculate the change and do suggest the procurement team and your management the amount of space needed to have the Synthetic backup implemented.

All the best...
