deduplication in Netbackup 7.0

Hi,

We are going introduce the Netbackup 7.0 deduplication feature in our environment. We have planned one Master and one media server and one Tape library with four tape drives.

How does the deduplication helps under this plan and we have weekly full backup and increment backup b/t Monday to thursday. Every week we are going remove the weekly tapes and sending to offsite, in this how does the deduplication can benifit to us?

I would suggest deploying a additional media server and place it off site. Then setup optimized duplication  (by Storage Lifecycle Policy's) between the media servers, this way you can avoid shipping tapes around. And should the first media server fail, you have all backup replicated to the secondary media server. Optimized duplication only move unique blocks of data, so the wan connection does need to be fat.


If you need to ship tapes one suggestion could be:

  Incremental go to dedupe storage unit, weekly to tapes.

or

• 
  
  Everything go to dedupe storage unit, but weekly backups are duplicated to tape for eject.
