If you're talking about a client, you can use an older client like 7.0 and it should work but technically it won't be supported. The interoperability between netbackup version is also covered in the document listed above.

It means I can backed-up for Suse 10 clients in 8.1.2 infrastructure but cannot be used as master or media server for 8.1.2 version.

Yes, but it's still unsupported (as you'll see in the compat list).

But it would probably work fine if it's just a file backups.
