import backup exec tape

Hopefully an easy question regarding importing a backup exec tape.

In reading the docs, they say

"To import Backup Exec media, run the vmphyinv physical inventory utility to update the Backup Exec media GUID in the NetBackup Media Manager database. The command needs to be run only once after creating the media IDs in the Netbackup Media Manager database."

Where I'm confused - do I need to do something other than run vmphyinv to "create the media IDs in the Netbackup Media Manager database"? I don't understand why it says run the command "only once" AFTER creating the media IDs. I'm fairly new to netbackup, so I don't know if I'm over-reading this statement or if there is another step in there that I'm missing.

Run vmphyinv as it says in the manual.  You can do multiple media using a semicolon delimited list.

NBU will then read the headers of each tape and put them in the BackupExec by automagic.

Then you have to run a Phase I import followed by Phase II if you find what you are looking for.

Once that has been done its follow the bouncing ball for restores.

Jim,

I’ve followed the bouncing ball several times, but I’m still getting an error.    After completing Phase I and Phase 2 successfully I receive an error when trying to perform a restore.  The generic error from Symantec is error (5).   The Detail status from the NBU Admin Console is posted below.

History:

·         The two tapes are from BUE 11d with no password

·         The NBU server is running on W2K3 x64 ENT

·         NBU is patched to version 6.5.3

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,

hi,

i am doubtfull about  your import;

please let me know if you followed the below procedure.

do first level import for the both the tapes

go to catalogs,  select the media id and media server, now import of 1 media will automatically import other tape in case of data containainng in both the tapes.

if you follow the  same procedure; then try reimporting them.
