there are a LOT of "invalid drive number" errors. I would do as Stuart suggests - delete & reconfigure your library/tape drives.

You could try tpautoconf -report_disc this may show inconsistencies, but I think deleting & recreating the drives would be the way to go.

On another note, unrelated to your drive issues:

From your logs there are also a LOT of "sh -c "/usr/openv/netbackup/bin/nbproxy" libminlic -mgrIORFile -LicenseManager-" processes running. Do you have a LOT of people using the Java GUI? If not you may also be suffering from the following:

The process "nbproxy libminlic" can be orphaned when the connection with the Java GUI is lost.
http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH70902

BUG REPORT: Closing the NetBackup Java Administrator console (jnbSA, the Java GUI) does not terminate the nbsl session. nbproxy processes run 24 hours before timing out. Frequently starting and stopping the Java GUI may increase the load on the master server due to many nbproxy processes running, which may affect NetBackup performance.
http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH70555

The fix for this issue is supposed to be in 6.5.5 but I'm sure I still encounter it in 6.5.6, but we don't utilise the Java GUI a great deal.

Check DOWN message in syslog. The reason drive goes down is logged with it. If you can not determine what wrong with it, show us the message and output of "sgscan -v", "scan" command.

Please do the following:

Add the following line to /usr/openv/volmgr/vm.conf:

VERBOSE

Restart NBU.
UP the drive.

Next time the drive goes DOWN, you will find an entry in /var/adm/messages that contains the reason for drive being DOWN'ed (search for DOWN in messages).

Is there other messages around these, and just GREP'd for DOWN.? If so post again with some more output.

Check/verify you have the correct processes running. Check your messages for some of these daemons also.

LTID kicks of a number of 'child processes' namely

Apologies for being unclear - we need the lines before and after the DOWN as well...

Usual stuff:

check hardware compatibility for your devices on the NBU matrix

check firmware on drives and robot

rerun library/device configuration

perform some robtest commands to communicate with your drives/library

are your "device mappings" up to date with the type of hardware your running.

there are a LOT of "invalid drive number" errors.

A number of ways to find firmware of your devices.

Common method (bold values are firmware versions)

# tpautoconf -r
HP MSL G3 Series 9.90 <serial number> -1 -1 -1 -1 /dev/sg20 - -
HP MSL G3 Series 9.90 <serial number> -1 -1 -1 -1 /dev/sg9 - -
# tpautoconf -t
HP Ultrium 4-SCSI H58W <serial number> -1 -1 -1 -1 /dev/nst7 - -
HP Ultrium 4-SCSI H58W <serial number> -1 -1 -1 -1 /dev/nst6 - -
HP Ultrium 4-SCSI H58W <serial number> -1 -1 -1 -1 /dev/nst5 - -
HP Ultrium 4-SCSI H58W <serial number> -1 -1 -1 -1 /dev/nst4 - -
HP Ultrium 4-SCSI H58W <serial number> -1 -1 -1 -1 /dev/nst3 - -
HP Ultrium 4-SCSI H58W <serial number> -1 -1 -1 -1 /dev/nst2 - -
HP Ultrium 4-SCSI H58W <serial number> -1 -1 -1 -1 /dev/nst1 - -
HP Ultrium 4-SCSI H58W <serial number> -1 -1 -1 -1 /dev/nst0 - -

You could use the 'scan [-tape] [-changer]' command also

Recommend once you get your NBU environment back working you update to 6.5.6 that way your not looking to solve a problem that may be addressed in subsequent releases from the version you are on. Even if only on the Master server to get you started.

Shutdown all netbackup services. so there are no processes listed on the server bgl-nb1

Check running processes with 'bpps -a' command

Startup netbackup services on server bgl-nb1

tpautoconf [ -r | -t ] will NOT modify your configuration it is a device discovery command. So please run this command and post output.

Also post output for command 'vmoprcmd'

Do these commands from your server bgl-nb1

Can I suggest you download the NetBackup Commands for Linux/Unix PDF guide so you can refer to commands that may be suggested to you in these forums, so you are familiar with what they will do.

Rather than us regurgitate this detailed information about them in digest form.

Start here as always and go to your versions documentation:
