vmware backup failed with error code 42

NetBackup Master: NetBackup 7.0.1, SuSE 11 SP1 x64
Backup Host: NetBackup 7.0.1, windows 2008 R2
VMware: ESXi 4.1
Guest OS: XP sp2
Description as follows:
when i backup vm, it always fails with error 42.

you need to put XP client FQDN in /etc/hosts in Linux (NBU master) &

you need to put master server hostname (FQDN) in host file of XP Client

I configure an environment with vmware yesterday.

You need make this steps.

1 - Put the host that manager the vmwares (ESX, ESXI or Vcenter) int >> Host Properties/Master Server/Vmware. Generally is Media Server.

2 - Put the hosts vmwares in  >> Credentials/Virtual Machine Servers with yours respectivies logins.

3 - Finally create an Snapshot Backup Policy. and follow the steps on te policy.

yes, i backup virtual machine on ESXi Server using Mapped Full VM method.

it's very strange. I reinstall NBU Client software on backup host, and backup again, the backup job is successful. same configuration and same operations.

i don't encounter this issue again,  so i don't verify the way you gave.

Do the following step:

1 - Install netbackup client on the server that manage vmware (ESX, ESXI or Vcenter).

2. Register the client IP and Hostname on master server also Register Master IP and Hostname on the server that manage vmware (This is to reduce the communication problem)

3 - Register Netbackup Client Services with yours respectivies logins( my suggestion is use domain admin account.

4 - Register full FQDN hostname that manage the vmware (ESX, ESXI or Vcenter)  on Netbackup Master Server Host Properties ---> VMWare Backup Host

5 - Add the hostname that manage the vmware (ESX, ESXI or Vcenter) on Master Server Host Properties ---> Server

6 - Put the hosts vmwares in  >> Credentials/Virtual Machine Servers with yours respectivies logins.

7 - Finally create an Snapshot Backup Policy. and follow the steps on the policy.
