what is the use of NBCC

What is NBCC command or process will do? Is there any specific time to run this command? any effect on the running backups?

NBCC or Netbackup Consistency Checker is a command line tool to analyze the intergrity of the Netabckup catalog and database information .The NBCC command executes the NBCC utility that is used to confirm the integrity of portions of the NetBackup catalog and databases, including the following elements:

 

• Tape media and associated images

• The NBDB image, ImageCopy table records, ImageFragment table records, and the image catalog

• Enterprise Media Manager (EMM) server entries and configured storage unit entries

If NBCC detects catalog inconsistencies, it generates a set of output files. It can create a support package bundle of these files by using available system utilities.

It is adviced to run it before you go for a major upgrade . if you have a large complex environment you should run it pereodically to check the integrity of Netbackup Database.Ideally you should not run this while backups are running as this utility gather the information from database and a running backup will be updating the same database Simultaneously.

it is given by symantec in some other case. I just want to know the function of it.

We normally run it to check catalog concistency before we upgrade NBU to a new version.

Best is to run NBCC while no backups are active, but we have often had to run it in a 24x7 environment with running backups. The incomplete images in the output can simply be ignored.
